At no other time in the year is the hypocrisy of the left more on display than at Christmas time. Liberals claim to be all for peace, yet they want nothing to do with the Prince of Peace. To quote the U2 song, “The Wanderer” – “They say they want the kingdom, but they don’t want God in it”.
It is a general mantra of the left that we should have separation of church and state. Unfortunately, they aren’t willing to stop at separation of church and state. They want to excise anything to do with the Christian God, not only from the political arena, but from the public square in general. Even our current president seems intent, maybe unconsciously, on removing God from the public view. In a speech at an Indonesian university last month, he incorrectly stated that the motto of the United States is “E Pluribus Unum”. In 1956, Congress passed an act that adopted “In God We Trust” as the national motto. Obama also frequently quotes from the Declaration of Independence, but when talking about our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness forgets, or purposefully neglects, to mention that those rights come from our Creator.
But back to Christmas. Why is it that the left embraces all other the other winter holidays, like Kwanza and Ramadan, like Nancy Pelosi embraces frequent botox injections, but they run from anything to do with Christmas like they run from a National Enquirer reporter asking questions about the immigration status of their nannies? Why are they so afraid of that little baby born in Bethlehem over 2000 years ago? The prophet Isaiah predicted 2000 years before Jesus was born that He would be the “Prince of Peace”. According to http://www.globalsecurity.org , by UN definitions and as of 2005, there were eight major wars being fought around the world with up to 20 other minor conflicts raging. If there was ever a world in need of peace, this would be it.
Yet for fear of being politically incorrect, or maybe purposefully to minimize its impact, we teach our children about Kwanza, Hanukkah and Ramadan in public schools and dismiss Christmas as the “winter holiday”. Every year there are stories from around the country of children learning, and imitating Muslim customs, but you can’t have a “Christmas” tree or Nativity scene in public or sing traditional Christmas carols anymore in school programs. For crying out loud, the last time I checked, Christmas, not Kwanza, Hanukkah or Ramadan, was a federal holiday and has been since 1870. Again, why is the world so afraid of Christmas?
I think I know. We want to be masters of our own destiny. Nothing has changed about human nature for thousands of years. Adam and Eve weren’t content to rely on their Creator for everything they needed, but decided they wanted to be like God themselves. People today are no different; they would rather rely on impersonal governments, which make no demands on them, to supply their needs than their Creator. And we want peace on our own terms. Cain was told what was an acceptable offering but because he went his own way, his offering was rejected. When you are the transgressor, you can’t make peace on your own terms. The baby came to be the prince of peace, but you have to accept the gift offered by the man the baby became – Jesus on the cross. His message, one of repentance leading to salvation and eternal peace, flies in the face of everything culture tells us – we can do whatever we want with no consequence. So we have a federal holiday that is a constant reminder that we are incapable of making peace with our Creator so the culture turns it into a festival of greed and merriment.
One other thing Isaiah prophesied about Jesus was that “of the increase of His government….there will be no end”. Like the perceived threat to Herod of old, it’s pretty clear the threat that Jesus represents to governments today. If He is who He says is, then the institutions we’ve set up to replace God will themselves be replaced. No wonder the left fears Christmas – at some point in the future, it means the end of all their big government schemes. It's time we re-embrace our nation's motto, In God We Trust, and stop trying to boot Him out of public life. Merry Christmas!
