Massachusetts: Home of Legendary Irony

Just how I like it, a smoking hot plate of legendary with a delicious side of irony.

Words like “epic” (from the Associated Press), “stunning” (from FoxNews), “historic” (from the Washington Post), “extraordinary” (from the New York Times) or my favorite, “bombshell” (from the Boston Herald itself), don’t do justice to Scott Brown’s win in Massachusetts on Tuesday.

One month ago, various polls had Coakley ahead by as much as 17%.  On January 5, Rasmussen still had her ahead by 9% (50 to 41).  Just five days ago, a poll sponsored by the Blue Mass Group, a Democratic blog and PAC, had Coakley up 49-41.  With 100% reporting tonight, Brown topped Coakley, 52% to 47%.  To overcome those odds in less than two weeks, in a historically blue state, to take the seat held by Ted Kennedy, is nothing short of legendary.

And speaking of Kennedy, could it be more ironic that a pending vote to pass one of Kennedy’s personal pet projects, the total government take-over of American healthcare, is likely to be held up by the man who took over Kennedy’s unfinished term.  And the win came just one year after Obama's inauguration, a clear message about what people think of his agenda, at least in Massachusetts.  It just doesn’t get any better than this.

All clichés and hyperbole aside, Brown’s victory is a light at the end of the tunnel for Middle America.  The frustration and angst over the lack of consideration we’re getting from the DC elites resulted in a backlash like never before seen in American politics.  That backlash is effectively brakes being applied to Obama’s out of control spending train.  What remains to be seen is whether or not the Democrats will now slow the train down, or whether, like the reckless progressives that they are, they instead accelerate their plans to push us over the brink into financial and societal ruin. We can only hope that they will change.
