So, a bunch of conservatives all gathered in DC this past weekend. Depending on whom you believe for the attendance count, anywhere from 300,000 to 500,000 showed up. All the usual conservative suspects were there, including conservative commentator Glenn Beck and Tea Party darling, former Alaskan governor Sarah Palin. While the likes of Al Sharpton tried to dismiss the rally as a racist attempt to co-opt the memory of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream Speech”, since the rally occurred exactly 47 years after King’s speech, most saw through such slander, including King’s own niece, Alveda King, who spoke at Beck’s rally.
The tone of the rally was patriotic and talk centered on a return to the American values that built this country and made it great. Alveda King’s comments to “Good Morning America” summed up the purpose of the rally, "I am attending this rally to help reclaim America…. I'm joining Glenn to talk about faith, hope, charity, honor. Those are things that America needs to reclaim. Our children need to remember to love each other how to honor each other, their parents, God and their neighbors. I agree with Glenn on all of those principles. So that's why I'm here. For me it's principles over politics."
But it was just talk. The people who want a return to those founding values more than likely already possess those values. While they want the country to return to these values, what they don’t realize is that almost half the people in this country have exchanged their faith for the lie that government can take care of the, their hope for the belief that government actually cares for them, any semblance of charity for a selfish entitlement mentality and their honor for debasement as they try to find new ways to squeeze money from those who produce. When about 47% of the people in this country pay no federal income taxes, and are content to continue living off the other 53%, reclaiming the promise that once was America is not going to be some easy task where we talk and hope that the American spirit is kindled anew with the fire patriotism and hard work.
Turning this country around is going to mean making hard choices to end entitlement programs that do nothing but bleed dry those who work hard in this country. Federal entitlement programs fly in the face of the very belief system so many on the left espouse. They claim there is no God and that Darwinian evolution got us where we are. If they truly believed in the survival of the fittest, they wouldn’t set up public assistance programs that perpetuate the survival of the lazy and stupid. Yet we have hundreds of programs that take care of those who are either too lazy or, by choice, too ignorant, to work. All because we allow politicians to buy votes.
But fixing that is not going to be any picnic either. Once a person is elected to Congress, there is little doubt that they are voluntarily going to give up any of the perks that come with the office. And those who depend on elected officials to keep the money flowing to their favorite entitlement program have no incentive to kick them out of office.
So what is the solution? Unfortunately, it’s looking more and more like talk is not the answer. We can talk all day but those who are selfish and only concerned with power or when they’re going to get their next government check are not listening. The answer can be found in a document written over 244 years ago. When our government becomes abusive and despotic, it is our right and our duty to throw off such government and provide news guards for our future security.
